My name is Mary-Lee, and I live in
Northern Ontario with my
husband,
and 3 children Wesley, Alexandre and Stephanie.
I started knitting when
I was 3 years old.
My Mom was in the
hospital having my
younger brother, and my
Dad took a wooden spool
of thread, hammered some
finishing nails into it,
and taught me to "cork".
I made yards and yards
of corking which I
spiraled into Barbie
carpets, skirts, purses,
and anything else I
could think of.
That summer I also
started sewing. My
Grandmother (who will be
90 in April) would let
me use all the scraps
that fell on the floor
when she was sewing.
So I was the little one
hiding under her cutting
table. I recall a
making a lovely green
velvet skirt lovingly
stitched with red
thread. Sorry,
don't have a photo of
it. I would have
been 4 or 5 yrs old.
Below is my first
attempt at crochet.
I was 7 or 8. And
knotted together as many
lovely colors as I
could. I loved
variegated yarns even
back then!

All through school I
made my own clothes.
At 5'5" tall, and a
children's size 12, it
was impossible to get
nice clothes to fit.
So if I wanted clothes,
I had to make them.
The photo with the low
cut sweater in black and
white was from a 1980
Vogue knitting magazine.
I changed the pattern,
changed the yarn but
kept the same shape to
the back.

I also created my
wedding gown from a
photo in a magazine.
All my bridesmaids
dresses, flower girl
dress, a set of teddy
bears and I crocheted
all the little baskets
filled with candy we
gave away.
Crafting has been a
labor of love all my
life.
Wesley, Alex and the
last photo Stephanie -
when they were younger I
made all their clothes.
Now, they rarely want me
to make anything for
them other than
Halloween costumes,
although Stephanie is
coming around.
When the boys were young
- before Steph was born
I made the cutest little
kitten sweaters for
them. And for
Stephanie's first
Communion she "allowed"
me to make her a gown
and jacket. At 8
years old Stephanie was
5'2" tall (in the photo
below), taller than my
Mom, and getting pretty
close to me. At 10
years old she is 5'4"
tall, and taller than
her teacher and all the
other students in her
grade 5 class.
Still hasn't caught up
to me, but very, very
close!

Now days, I make doll
clothes and write
patterns. If you

Experimenting with
felting, I knit and
felted my winter coat.
This was many years ago,
note the kids are all
shorter than me (which
is no longer the case -
Wesley is 6' tall)
Prior to felting I was
very nervous, but the
yarn from Harvey
Station, NB - Briggs and
Little felted
beautifully.
Although I have never
done another felting
project, I certainly
will try it again.
I let my hair grow to my
waist, and cut 2 braids
in April 2006 - each
were over 2" in diameter
and 16" long (about 18"
of hair) and I lost
several lbs once the
stylist was finish
shaping my new short
hair. The braids
were donated to Locks of
Love to make wigs for
children with Cancer.
I work part time as an
office administrator,
and would like to get my
Masters in knitting in
2007.
Any special requests are
welcome. If I can
do it, I will!
Stephanie's Halloween
Costume
My darling daughter has
read almost every Jane
Austen book this summer,
and wanted to be a
fictional character from
the 1785 era (like Lizzy
Bennett in Pride &
Prejudice) so we went to
work to make her a gown
and coat. She
picked the fabrics,
colors, and style.
Unfortunately it rained
last night, and the
bottom of her dress and
coat was wet.

The collar differs from
the lining as I required
a lighter fabric so it
would "stand" at the
neckline. The
lining was too heavy to
use as a collar and
would flop over.
The coat was completely
lined in gold fabric.
The dress is a lovely 2
tone fabric which looks
like little stripes of
shiny ribbon! I
think they call this
style of sleeve "leg of
mutton", and they were
surprisingly easy to
make. Steph's hair
was a mass of ringlets
(typical to the period)
- but the rain quickly
took out all her curl.
Rather than lace the
back of the dress, I put
in a zipper. The
grade 6 boys in her
class may have pulled
her ribbons - wasn't
going to risk it!!
Same for the front of
the coat, I sewed hook &
eyes rather than lacing
the closure.
There is suppose to be
another costume party
this weekend, and we
will get a photo of
Stephanie in her
costume!
Finally I updated the
kids photo!! This
is Wes' 17th birthday.
Alex is 13, Stephanie is
11.

Another photo of Wes as
President of the Green
Committee at a recent
school function.

My 2 Laches - tanned
limited collection dolls
by Latidoll. I was
fortunate enough to get
both sizes.
