CAST ON AND CAST OFF WITH LARGER NEEDLES

This is craft yarn.  I used small needles - 0 or 2 mm to knit the garter stitch.  The larger needle is a 4 mm, I used it to cast on and my last cast off row.  If this were a garment, I would have used a slightly smaller (3mm) knitting needle to create a tighter cast off.

I found this great little hook tool at the dollar store.  I am sure it was not made for the purpose of casting off doll clothes, but it works!!

It has a small hook at one end, with a latch which closes to easily capture the thread from the next stitch, the latch closes as it passes through the loop, and your stitch is complete.  It makes a PERFECT finish.  I use this technique on everything I make!!

The first few stitches on the cast on row (at the top of the photo) don't look as nice as the rest of the row.  But it sure does do the trick - makes your cast on row nice and tight.  The cast off row (at the bottom) is very loose.  One important thing to remember is to start at the opposite end of your "tail", the cast on or cast off edge, because when you get to the last stitch, you pull the "tail" through to anchor your last stitch.

Hope this helps.
